The federal government is suspending a program which offered people financial incentives to have their homes evaluated for energy efficiency and then perform upgrades to improve the rating.
Under the ecoEnergy Retrofit program, homeowners could receive a grant of up to $5,000 to carry out energy saving improvements.
The program technically runs until March 31, 2011, but the government will not accept bookings for pre-retrofit evaluations after midnight Wednesday. Homeowners who have already booked an appointment, have completed an evaluation, or applied for re-entry into the program have until next year to apply for the retrofit grant.
On the program’s official website, the federal government said it was “committed to reviewing its energy efficiency and emissions reductions programs to ensure they continue to be an effective and efficient use of Canadian tax dollars.”
The Conservatives launched the ecoEnergy Retrofit program in April 2007. By 2009, the government had paid out $91 million to homeowners for more than 85,000 home retrofits.
Liberal MPP David McGuinty told the Globe and Mail newspaper the program had become too popular and, therefore, too costly.
“Here is what has really happened — demand tripled since 2007,” the Globe quoted McGuinty as saying.
The federal budget unveiled on March 4 included an additional $80 million for the retrofit program.
Many provinces, such as Ontario, match the federal rebates. Those programs are expected to continue.

Commuters in the Greater Toronto Area suffer through longer round trips than their counterparts in 18 other major centres, including notoriously congested Los Angeles, according to a new report commissioned by the Toronto Board of Trade.
The board’s second annual “scorecard on prosperity” concluded the average GTA commute lasts a punishing 80 minutes for drivers and public-transit riders alike, putting the region an “embarrassing” last place behind not only L.A., but also the gridlocked metropolises of New York, London and Montreal.
“The report shows [commute times in the GTA] are getting worse,” said Carol Wilding, the president of the board of trade. “So there’s another clearly strong proof point and evidence that says they’re getting worse; we’ve underinvested. We’ve got to get on with it.”

Premier Dalton McGuinty insists he is not rattled by apparent dissension in his Liberal ranks. In a move that even loyalists now concede was ill-advised, McGuinty ordered all staff members to leave the Liberal caucus room on May 13 then criticized MPPs for speaking out of school.
The MPP said the ensuing one-hour discussion, sparked by a May 10 Star article headlined “Premier McGuinty’s tight ship,” exposed a growing resentment from elected officials over the increasing centralization of power.
“There’s a bit of arrogance coming out of the premier’s office,” said another senior Liberal.

Ontario’s legislature has ordered Toronto’s 9,000 transit workers to end their suprise strike that idled the country’s largest fleet of subways, streetcars and buses. All parties supported the bill, introduced personally by Premier Dalton McGuinty, who called a rare Sunday session of the legislature to pass the back-to-work legislation.
As a result, subway trains, streetcars and buses should be rolling within hours, well before Monday’s commuter rush begins – welcome relief to the 1.5 million people who use transit weekdays.
The legislation imposes fines on individuals and the union if they don’t heed the back-to-work order.
The city was caught flat-footed when the transit workers walked out with barely any notice at midnight Friday night after rejecting a tentative contract.
McGuinty called on transit users to extend courtesy to transit workers.

The ‘Dalton McGuinty Show’ just aired on CFRB, between noon and 1PM. In an effort to be totally unbiased on this issue, I did listen to all of the leadership candidates and in general they all did a great job. Albeit I did not think that the Green Party leader, Frank De Jong, needed to have someone from New Zealand? But that is beside the point. What was particularly disturbing is the free ride or shall I say “free advertisement” Dalton McGuinty just received via CFRB. We have not had an opportunity to see Dalton McGuinty truly answer questions, which may not necessarily be easy to answer, from the electorate. All events have been choreographed and staged extremely well. When pressed by reporters to answer difficult questions, Mr. McGuinty, ever so skillfully and tactfully, avoids the question. What is more upsetting is the fact that he essentially got 1 hour of “free” radio time to promote his agenda. I am not sure but I almost felt like I was in a trace or radio mind meld, so maybe he is Vulcan? It actually at one point sounded like a ‘Liberal Love-in’ at one point. I wish more stringent guidelines were placed on all of the leadership candidates, for their respective shows. Maybe next time producers of the show will be more careful to ensure that each leadership candidate answers questions from the electorate, and not avoid and ignore us completely. With one day left before the election, Dalton McGuinty successfully used CFRB, to his and the Liberals advantage, as a tool for his inauguration.

With just one full day of campaigning left before the Ontario election, NDP Leader Howard Hampton spent today trying to chip away at the chances of a Liberal majority government. At a campaign stop in Oshawa, Ont., Hampton disparaged Liberal Leader Dalton McGuinty at every turn.
Hampton warned voters that a majority mandate would give McGuinty free reign to spend taxpayer money as he sees fit, break promises and possibly raise taxes. Hampton pleaded with the public to keep McGuinty “accountable.”
“Voters are telling us they don’t believe Dalton McGuinty, they don’t trust Dalton McGuinty and they don’t want Dalton McGuinty to have a majority government because they know what happens,” Hampton said after meeting with NDP candidate Sid Ryan at a Tim Horton’s in Oshawa.
“A day after the election all the promises mean absolutely nothing.”

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty conceded Friday there are problems with a government spending program that saw $200,000 shipped to a group headed by two senior Liberal party activists, including one candidate in the upcoming election.
McGuinty said his government was going to “have to take a look” at the program which, despite doling out approximately $32 million over the past two years, according to records, has neither a formal application process nor any selection criteria. In fact, the program does not even have a name.
It was under those circumstances that the Iranian-Canadian Community Centre received the $200,000 cash grant only three weeks after registering in March 2006. The charitable organization, initially categorized under “protection of animals,” was later changed to “recreation, playgrounds and vacation camps.”
The group lists its mailing address as the law office of charity director David Farmani, Liberal riding association president for Richmond Hill.
Reza Moridi, the Liberal candidate in the same riding is listed as another director. A third director, Bohran Fouladi, is a longtime acquaintance of Finance Minister Greg Sorbara.
“I think we can do a better job and I think that we have to do a better job,” McGuinty told reporters Friday. “We’re going to have to look at it.”
